PROGRAM CONTENT AND STRUCTURE
Fundamental to the special skills and abilities of the photograph conservator are a thorough understanding of photographic history, chemistry, and deterioration mechanisms; the technology and identification of photographic processes; and methods of conservation treatment and preventive care. We recognize that the skills required by a photograph conservator are distinct from those who practice other conservation disciplines.
The Advanced Residency Program offered a two-year educational cycle focused on the
following areas: (1) imaging technology and history; (2) conservation treatment; and (3) research. Throughout the first year, Fellows were engaged in courses and projects involving imaging technology and history and were introduced to specialized research methods for photographic materials. During the second year, they assumed either a major research
project or several smaller projects. For both years, the Fellows participated in a guided practicum in conservation treatment.
