Long the center of the photographic industry and education, Rochester, New York, is clearly the ideal location for this program. Rochester possesses the highest concentration of resources in the world for research and teaching in the field of photograph conservation.

 

George Eastman House has superb collections of photography, film, and technology, as well as the world’s most important library on those subjects. Grant Romer, director of the Advanced Residency Program, has been associated with George Eastman House since 1975. An expert on the daguerreotype, he is in high demand to lecture at conferences all over the world. Grant Romer is an internationally renowned and respected authority and teacher in the field of photograph conservation. Through his efforts, George Eastman House has become one of the few places in the world where advanced learning opportunities are available in this field.

 

The Image Permanence Institute (IPI) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a complementary resource to George Eastman House. Headed by the Advanced Residency Program’s co-director, James M. Reilly, IPI is the leading academic research laboratory dealing with photograph preservation and conservation. With its 4,500 sq. ft. laboratory, IPI engages in a variety of research projects sponsored by federal and private sources. IPI is located on the RIT campus, a private university known worldwide as a leading institution for education in photography, printing, and imaging science. IPI’s staff of chemists, imaging scientists, and conservation researchers serve as teachers and mentors of the Andrew W. Mellon Fellows.
